Your week, day by day

  1. Day 1

On board basics and first maneuvers

Getting to know the boat, safety routines and roles on board, then the first handling drills to build control and confidence.

  2. Days 2–4

    Docking training in the marina

Based in Punat, you train with high repetition: stern-to and side-to docking, spring lines and tight-space maneuvering, plus buoy pickup and anchoring drills.

  3. Days 5–7

    Sailing trip around the islands

A round trip around Krk, Rab, Plavnik, Cres and Grgur, with nights at anchor or on a buoy. You plan each day's route, navigate, handle the sails and choose safe stops, as on a charter week.

Every day from 9:00 to 17:00, with an hour's break for lunch.

Note: the program can change with the weather. When conditions call for it, the instructor adapts the plan, so the course stays as safe and as useful as it can be.

Language: the course is taught in English. It can be taught in Croatian or Slovenian only if all the participants speak that language.

Q&A: Charter-ready skipper training

Who is the skipper training for?

The Skipper Hotline skipper training in Punat on Krk is for anyone who wants to skipper a charter boat in Croatia: complete beginners, crew members who want to take over as skipper, and license holders with little practice. You need no previous experience.

What will I learn on the skipper training?

Everything a skipper needs on a charter week:

  • docking: stern-to (Med mooring), side-to, spring lines and tight spaces
  • picking up a mooring buoy, and anchoring
  • sail handling: hoisting, trimming and reefing, tacking and gybing
  • basic navigation and planning a day: distances, stops, fuel and water
  • weather and safety: reading the forecast and choosing a safe place for the night
  • the knots you use on charter
How is the 7-day skipper training organized?
  • Day 1: the boat, safety routines and crew roles, and the first maneuvers.
  • Days 2 to 4: docking practice in Marina Punat, with buoys, anchoring and short theory.
  • Days 5 to 7: a sailing trip around the nearby Kvarner islands. You plan the days, sail and run the boat like on a charter week.

The program can change with the weather.

Which islands do we sail to?

Around Krk, Rab, Plavnik, Cres and Grgur, depending on the wind. You plan short passages, choose safe bays and spend the nights at anchor or on a buoy.

Will I be ready for my first bareboat charter after the course?

Yes, for a first charter in good conditions. The training follows a real charter week: planning the route, using the boat's systems, docking in marinas and making decisions when the weather changes.

One week doesn't make you an expert. For your first charter, choose an easy area and a boat that isn't too big, and keep practicing. When you book the boat through Skipper Hotline, a local skipper supports you on WhatsApp during the charter.

How much does the skipper training cost?

2027 prices per person for 7 days:

  • Regular: €700, up to 6 people, shared cabin
  • Premium: €1,400, up to 3 people, private cabin

The price includes the instructor, accommodation on board, the marina berth and mooring costs, fuel, tourist tax, final cleaning and a course certificate. Food and travel to Punat are not included.

How many students are on board, and will I get time at the helm?

Regular courses have up to 6 students, and premium courses up to 3. When sailing, students rotate through the key roles: helm, mainsheet, headsail and halyard, so everyone practices each one. For docking, a rotation makes sure everyone does the same number of dockings.

In a full group, you are at the helm about 17% of the time in a regular course and 33% in a premium course.

Do I get a license after the skipper training?

No. The skipper training is a practical course, and you get a course completion certificate, not a license.

To charter a boat in Croatia you need a recognized license, usually with a VHF radio certificate. If you need the Croatian license (voditelj brodice, category B), we can arrange the theory session and the exam after the course. The exam is not included in the price.

Is the skipper training on a sailboat or a catamaran?

On a sailboat. If you will charter a catamaran, add the catamaran docking training, because docking a catamaran needs a different technique.

Where do we sleep during the skipper training?

On the boat. The first nights you stay in Marina Punat, and during the sailing days at anchor or on a buoy in the island bays. Regular courses have shared cabins, and premium courses a private cabin for each student.

What happens after the course?

You are ready to plan your first charter. Book the boat through Skipper Hotline, and a local skipper supports you on WhatsApp before and during the trip, at no extra cost: route planning, storm and wind warnings, and a second opinion whenever you are not sure.

Before your next season, the spring warm-up helps you refresh your docking and sailing.
