Q&A: Sailing school in Punat, Krk

Is there a sailing school in Punat on the island of Krk?

Yes. Skipper Hotline runs a sailing school in Punat on the island of Krk, in the Kvarner region of northern Croatia. The courses start in Marina Punat and are taught by local instructors who work as professional skippers on sailboats and catamarans every summer.

You can learn to sail and skipper a charter boat, practice docking a sailboat or a catamaran, refresh your skills before the season, or train 1-on-1 with an instructor. The courses run from April to October.

What sailing courses can I take in Punat?

The Skipper Hotline sailing school in Punat offers four courses:

  • Skipper training (7 days, sailboat): docking, sailing, anchoring and navigation, with 3 days of sailing around the Kvarner islands. For your first charter as a skipper. No experience needed.
  • Docking training (3 days on a sailboat, 2 days on a catamaran): stern-to and side-to docking, spring lines, buoys and anchoring in Marina Punat. No experience needed.
  • Spring warm-up (2 days, spring weekends, on a sailboat or catamaran): a docking and sailing refresher for skippers with previous experience.
  • Private training (1 to 7 days, on your dates): 1-on-1 with an instructor, in Punat or in other Croatian marinas.

Regular courses, with up to 6 people, run on fixed dates together with our partner NAS Sailing Center. Premium courses, with up to 3 people, run on our own dates.

Which sailing course should I choose?

It depends on your experience and on the boat you will charter:

  • No sailing experience: the skipper training. In 7 days it takes you from the basics to your first charter.
  • A license or some sailing, but docking makes you nervous: the docking training, on the same type of boat you will charter, a sailboat or a catamaran.
  • You have sailed before and want to refresh your skills: the spring warm-up.
  • You want to train only what you need, on your dates: private training.

Not sure which one fits? Send us a message on WhatsApp (+385 91 591 1123), and we suggest the right course.

How much does a sailing course in Punat cost?

2027 prices per person at the Skipper Hotline sailing school:

  • Skipper training (7 days): €700 regular, €1,400 premium
  • Docking training on a sailboat (3 days): €400 regular, €800 premium
  • Docking training on a catamaran (2 days): €600 regular, €1,200 premium
  • Spring warm-up (2 days): €600 on a sailboat, €800 on a catamaran
  • Private training: €250 a day for the instructor, on your own boat or a charter boat

Regular prices are with a shared cabin, and premium prices with a private cabin. Regular and premium prices include accommodation on board and all boat costs. Food and travel to Punat are not included.

Why learn to sail in Punat on Krk?

Punat is a good place to learn the skills you need on charter:

  • A protected bay: Marina Punat lies in Puntarska draga, a well-protected bay, so the first maneuvers are easier.
  • A real charter marina: the marina has about 800 berths and many charter boats, so you practice docking in the same conditions as on a charter week. It opened in 1964 and is one of the oldest marinas on the Croatian coast.
  • Real wind: the bura often blows in Kvarner, especially in spring and autumn, so there is a good chance to practice docking in wind.
  • Islands nearby: Rab, Cres, Plavnik and Grgur are a short sail away.
  • Easy to reach: by car over the Krk bridge, and Rijeka airport is on the island, about 30 km from Punat.
What is the difference between regular and premium courses?

The program is the same. The difference is how many people are on the boat:

  • Regular: up to 6 people, in a shared cabin, on fixed dates with our partner NAS Sailing Center. The lowest price.
  • Premium: up to 3 people, each in a private cabin, on Skipper Hotline's own dates. It costs twice as much.

In a full group, you are at the helm every 6th docking in a regular course, and every 3rd docking in a premium course. So in the same days, a premium course gives you twice as much practice at the helm.

Learning to sail and docking

Can I learn to sail in a week?

Yes, enough for a first charter in good conditions. The Skipper Hotline skipper training in Punat takes you from no experience to skippering a charter boat in 7 days: docking, sailing, anchoring and planning a day on the water.

One week doesn't make you an expert. For a first charter, choose an easy area and a boat that isn't too big, and keep practicing. When you book the boat through Skipper Hotline, a local skipper also supports you on WhatsApp during the charter.

Do I need sailing experience for a course?

No, not for the skipper training or the docking training. Both start from the basics. The spring warm-up is for skippers with previous experience, and private training is for any level.

How much time will I spend at the helm?

We train about 7 hours a day, and the students take turns, so everyone does the same number of dockings and maneuvers. In a full group, your share of the time at the helm is:

  • Regular course, 6 people: 17%
  • Spring warm-up, 4 people: 25%
  • Premium course, 3 people: 33%
  • Private training: 100%

When it's not your turn, you work as crew: on the lines and fenders, and when sailing, on the sheets and halyards. Watching the others dock and hearing the instructor's corrections also helps. With fewer people in the group, everyone practices more.

How much theory is there?

Very little. Most of the day is on the water. Before each exercise there is a short briefing, then you practice and get feedback: plan, practice, debrief, repeat. The skipper training also has short sessions on navigation, weather, safety and route planning, tied to what you do on the boat that day.

What if there is strong wind or bad weather during the course?

Wind is part of the training. The bura is common in Kvarner, especially in spring and autumn, so there is a good chance you practice docking in wind, as you will need to on charter.

If the conditions are not safe, the instructor changes the program, for example with more marina work and less sailing, or with exercises in a more sheltered place.

Can I come with my partner, family or friends?

Yes. Training together helps, because you practice the roles you will have on charter: one person at the helm, the others on the lines.

In a regular course, each person books a place in a group of up to 6. A premium course has room for up to 3 people, so it suits a couple or a small group of friends. The spring warm-up has room for up to 4, so a small crew can train together before the summer.

Do I need a license for a course, and what do I get at the end?

You don't need a license for any of our courses, and the courses don't give you one. At the end of the skipper training, the docking training and the spring warm-up, you get a course completion certificate. It shows the training you did, but it is not a boating license.

To charter a boat in Croatia without a hired skipper, you need a license that Croatia recognizes, usually together with a VHF radio certificate. The Book a Boat page explains which licenses are accepted. If you need the Croatian license (voditelj brodice, category B), we can arrange the theory session and the exam after the sailing course. The exam is not included in the course price.

Dates, place and practical information

When can I take a sailing course in Punat?
  • Regular courses: on fixed dates from April to October, together with NAS Sailing Center.
  • Premium courses: on Skipper Hotline's own dates.
  • Spring warm-up: on weekends in spring, before the charter season.
  • Private training: on the dates that suit you.

You find all dates on each course page. A course in spring or early summer gives you fresh skills for a summer charter.

Where do the courses start, and how do I get to Punat?

The courses start in Marina Punat, in Punat on the island of Krk. Krk is connected to the mainland by a bridge, with no toll since 2020, so it is easy to reach by car from Central Europe.

The nearest airport is Rijeka airport, on the island of Krk, about 30 km from Punat (20 to 30 minutes by taxi). Trieste airport is about 120 km away, Ljubljana airport about 170 km and Zagreb airport about 210 km.

Where do I sleep during the course?

On the boat. On regular courses you share a cabin, and on premium courses each student has a private cabin. On the docking training you stay in Marina Punat, and on the skipper training you also spend nights at anchor or on a buoy near the islands.

What is included in the course price?

For regular and premium courses:

  • the instructor for the whole course
  • accommodation on board, with bed linen: a shared cabin in regular courses, a private cabin in premium courses
  • the marina berth and mooring costs during the course
  • fuel and cooking gas
  • tourist tax
  • final boat cleaning
  • a course completion certificate

Not included: food and drinks, and travel to and from Punat. For private training, you pay the instructor by the day, on your own boat or a charter boat.

What should I bring to a sailing course?
  • shoes with a good grip
  • layered clothes and a windproof jacket, plus warm layers and a waterproof jacket in spring and autumn
  • a cap or a wide-brim hat, sunglasses and sun protection
  • enough water and any personal medications

Sailing gloves are welcome but not necessary. All safety equipment is on the boat. A soft bag is easier to store on board than a hard suitcase.

What language are the courses taught in?

In English. A course can be taught in Croatian or Slovenian only if all the participants speak that language.

How do I book a course?

Open the course page, choose a date and send the reservation request. You can also write to us on WhatsApp (+385 91 591 1123) or by e-mail (booking@skipperhotline.eu). We confirm your place and send you the next steps.

How do I choose a sailing school in Punat or on Krk?

Punat has several sailing schools. Compare them on these points:

  • What you want to learn: a license, racing, or the skills for a charter week. The Skipper Hotline sailing school focuses on charter skills: docking, anchoring, sailing and planning the day.
  • People on the boat: fewer people means more practice at the helm. Our premium courses have a maximum of 3.
  • The instructors: ask who teaches and how much they sail. Ours work as professional skippers on sailboats and catamarans every summer.
  • Clear prices: check what is included. Our course prices include accommodation on board and all boat costs.
  • After the course: when you book a charter boat through Skipper Hotline, a local skipper supports you on WhatsApp during your first charter.
What do students say about the courses?

Skipper Hotline is rated 5.0 out of 5 on Google. Two comments from students:

  • "As a trainer he is competent, detailed and clear." (Simone P.)
  • "He explained everything clearly, broke down complex techniques into simple steps, and always made sure we understood before moving on." (Gergo M., who learned to sail with his family)
What is NAS Sailing Center?

NAS Sailing Center is a sailing school and charter company based in Punat on Krk. Skipper Hotline's regular courses run on fixed dates together with NAS. Premium courses, the spring warm-up and private training run on Skipper Hotline's own dates.

Can Skipper Hotline help me book a boat after the course?

Yes. Skipper Hotline is also a boat booking agency. Book any boat in Croatia through us, and Skipper Hotline Assistance is included at no extra cost: a route plan for your crew, storm and wind warnings, and a local skipper on WhatsApp during the whole charter, every day from 8:00 to 22:00.

You pay the charter company's own price for the boat. The assistance is support after the training, not a replacement for it.
